Solo Exhibition Underscore Projects, Milwaukee WI May 27 - June 27, 2023 8 archival inkjet prints, 28"x28" + 16mm film installation Show Notes I began taking these portraits in fall 2022, shortly after learning I was pregnant with my first child. The portrait is a shared space, by nature singular and also constructed by two, similar to pregnancy. I wanted to document the world my child was coming into through portraits of friends, fellow artists and colleagues. The attempt to preserve this time is met with an attempt to accept the inevitable change and uncertainty as to what or whom will be next to us in the future. After learning I was pregnant, I found significance in Maurice Merleau Ponty’s writing on what he calls ‘the chiasm’. He describes the chiasm as the looking that palates things. He describes our ability to see others and to see ourselves as the intertwining and pairing that forms us. I began taking these portraits to create intentional moments of pairing between the subjects, myself, and my future child. We are all intertwined by the action – I capture their image while they look at me and my pregnancy, their looking making my child a possibility, a latency, and a flesh. |
